Key Points

  • This paper aims to redefine the unit of analysis in account-based marketing (ABM) to focus on individuals rather than organizations.
  • Introduces the Personafication System™, an eight-phase ABM methodology.
  • Defines five key constructs: pre-commercial window, invisible buyer, shortlist architecture, recognition effect, and the Personafication System™.
  • Draws on empirical evidence from various research firms and neurological studies.
  • Over 80% of B2B buyers create a vendor shortlist before formal research.
  • 90% of buyers purchase from their initial shortlist, with 71% choosing the top vendor.
  • Identifies how dark funnel channels influence vendor shortlist assembly.

Abstract

This working paper introduces and documents the Personafication System™, an eight-phase account-based marketing (ABM) methodology developed by Alberto Regis (IperLeads) that places the individual human being — rather than the organizational account — at the center of all B2B commercial program design. The paper addresses a structural failure in conventional ABM practice: the treatment of companies as the relevant unit of analysis in complex B2B purchasing decisions. Empirical evidence from Gartner, Forrester, Bain 90% purchase from their initial list; 71% purchase the number-one vendor on that list; and 41% have a preferred vendor before formal evaluation begins. The shortlist is not built during the evaluation. It is built in the pre-commercial window — typically 6 to 12 months before any RFP — through channels no conventional intent data platform reaches. The paper defines and operationalizes five key constructs: (1) the pre-commercial window, the period before any formal buying signal in which vendor shortlists are assembled through dark funnel channels; (2) the invisible buyer, the decision-influencing stakeholder who leaves no CRM-traceable digital footprint; (3) shortlist architecture, the distributed social process through which internal champions and their influencing constellations construct vendor consideration sets; (4) the recognition effect, the neurological response activated when content demonstrates genuine understanding of a specific individual's operational reality, documented through mirror neuron research (Rizzolatti and (5) the Personafication System™ itself, defined as the inversion of conventional ABM logic from market-to-account-to-individual, reversed to account-to-relational-system-to-specific-person. The neurological foundation of the methodology draws on Damásio's somatic marker hypothesis, Zak's oxytocin-mediated trust research, Rizzolatti's mirror neuron system, and Shamay-Tsoory's distinction between cognitive and emotional empathy, applied to the design of pre-commercial trust engineering in industrial B2B contexts. This paper is part of a series of practice-based research publications by Alberto Regis on account-based marketing in Italian manufacturing and European industrial B2B markets, including Already Decided (2025), Marketing Lento (2025), and Before the Signal (2026). The Personafication System™ is the operational methodology underlying all programs documented in that series. Recommended citation: Regis, A. (2026).
