Abstract Mit Donald Trumps zweitem Amtsantritt 2025 erlebte die US-Handelspolitik eine deutliche protektionistische Wende. Zölle wurden massiv erhöht und treffen nun nicht nur China, sondern auch traditionelle Partner wie die EU, Kanada und Mexiko. Die erratische Zollpolitik ließ die effektiven US-Importzölle zeitweise auf fast 18 % steigen. Der Beitrag analysiert die rechtlichen Grundlagen und die Entwicklung der Zölle, diskutiert sie im Lichte der Optimalzolltheorie und zeigt, dass Handelskonflikte zu Wohlfahrtsverlusten führen. Erste empirische Evidenz weist auf steigende Preise, negative Arbeitsmarkteffekte für die US-Industrie sowie rückläufige Exporte Österreichs hin. Abschließend werden handelspolitische Optionen für EU und Österreich zur Schadensbegrenzung skizziert.
