Abstract

The compounds LiAuS and Li3AuS2 were synthesized by the reactions of Au and S with the Li2S as the reactive flux. The compound LiAuS crystallizes with 16 formula units in the orthorhombic space group Fddd in a cell at T = 153 K. An earlier report of a monoclinic cell for this compound is incorrect. The compound Li3AuS2, which is isostructural with Na3AuS2, crystallizes with four formula units in the orthorhombic space group Ibam in a cell at T = 153 K. LiAuS contains infinite zigzag chains. Li3AuS2 is composed of AuS23- clusters. In both compounds, each Au atom is linearly coordinated to two S atoms. Both compounds exhibit short Au+···Au+ interactions: 3.1632(4) Å in LiAuS and 3.1383(6) Å in Li3AuS2.
