Abstract There have been two reserve‐management‐orientated symposia in Dunedin in 1988, so it is timely that this review book should appear, deal so effectively with general conservation theory (giving many Australian examples of problems and solutions), and thereby sharpen our focus on the practical reserve management issues common or peculiar to New Zealand. The book is the outcome of a conference, held at Busselton, Western Australia, on management and conservation of small vegetation remnants. It was jointly organised by the Western Australian Department of Conservation and Land Management and CSIRO. The appearance of these substantial and tightly edited proceedings within three years of a request from the State Government is an impressive achievement.
