Chlorhexidine-miconazole-loaded iron oxide nanoparticles inhibit denture stomatitis biofilms in vitro

WRWilmer Ramírez-CarmonaCSCaio SampaioHAHeitor Ceolin Araujo

Key Points

  • This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of chlorhexidine-miconazole-loaded iron oxide nanoparticles against denture stomatitis biofilms.
  • Developed chitosan-coated iron oxide nanoparticles as a dual-nanocarrier for chlorhexidine and miconazole.
  • Assessed the impact of these nanoparticles on biofilms mimicking denture stomatitis conditions in vitro.
  • Demonstrated significant inhibition of denture stomatitis biofilm formation by the dual-nanocarrier system.
  • Showed improved biofilm reduction compared to using chlorhexidine or miconazole alone.

Abstract

Purpose: This study used chitosan (CS)-coated iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) to create a dual-nanocarrier consisting of chlorhexidine (CHX) and miconazole (MCZ) and assessed their impact on a denture stomatitis microcosm biofilm.
