Road traffic is an efficient and well accepted means of transportation and is still increasing in every country. What will it be like in the future? The European automotive manufacturers have initiated research work together with electronic and supplier companies, with traffic engineers and administrations towards an inte grated technical approach by using the foreseeable possibilities of electronics and infor- matics both in vehicles and for roadside equipment in order to increase traffic safety, environment compatibility and efficiency.
