Data on the use of leisure time by persons 46 to 71 years of age are presented. Consideration is given to what people actually do with their leisure time and what satisfactions they derive from their leisure activities. The findings suggest that ours is still largely a work-oriented, not a leisure-oriented, society. In order to prevent serious maladjustments and dissatisfactions in old age we must strive for more education for leisure at younger ages and for flexible, that is, gradual retirement policies late in life.
