Given the increasing emphasis on cost containment in medicine and the major contribution of hospitalization to the increasing expense of health care, it becomes critical to analyze patterns of hospital utilization. Such an analysis has been undertaken in northern New England and reveals significant differences in physician practices from area to area and from locality to locality.
