Key Points

  • To explore the mechanisms of fat transport in lipoproteins and its implications for lipid disorders.
  • Analyzed plasma lipid concentrations in subjects on fat-free diets.
  • Monitored changes in glyceride levels throughout the day relative to meal intake.
  • Glyceride concentrations peak about three hours after breakfast.
  • Lipid levels remain highest before meals, indicating meal timing affects transport.

Abstract

Glyceride TransportTwo Forms of Plasma Glyceride TransportIn subjects on fat-free diets the plasma lipid concentrations vary little throughout the day and tend to be highest just before breakfast.102 When the diet contains fat the levels of cholesterol and phospholipids in plasma are still relatively constant, but the glyceride concentration, as already intimated, is quite variable. It is lowest during the early morning hours (when blood samples for analysis are usually taken) and rises sharply, reaching a peak about three hours after breakfast. The concentration is boosted again by the midday meal, and after some decline in the afternoon, . . .
