Key Points

  • This study aims to explore how OsFKBP57 and OsFKBP73 impact salt tolerance and grain protein accumulation in rice.
  • Investigated the interaction of OsFKBP57 and OsFKBP73 with OsBCAT1 under salt stress.
  • Assessed grain protein levels and quality in OsFKBP57 and OsFKBP73 knockout rice plants.
  • Evaluated the enzyme activity of OsBCAT1 in relation to salt tolerance.
  • Knockout of OsFKBP57 and OsFKBP73 increased glutelin accumulation in grains, indicating a potential decrease in rice quality under saline conditions.
  • Both proteins enhanced the SOS pathway that contributes to salt tolerance in rice plants.
  • Inhibition of OsBCAT1 activity by OsFKBPs regulated amino acid levels, impacting total grain protein content.

Abstract

accumulation in rice and enhances salt tolerance. Concurrently, OsFKBP57 and OsFKBP73 interact with the branched-chain amino acid transaminase OsBCAT1, inhibiting its enzymatic activity and regulating the amino acid levels in grains under salt stress. Knockout of OsFKBP57 and OsFKBP73 increases glutelin accumulation in grains and degrades rice quality under saline conditions. Together, these actions directly mediate total grain protein content in rice under salt stress. Our study identifies these genes as central regulators that coordinate salt tolerance and grain quality in rice.
