Key Points

  • The aim is to investigate the diverse forms of silvopasture in relation to regional characteristics in the EU Continental region.
  • Analysis of land cover types across the Continental region
  • Evaluation of forest types and ownership patterns
  • Comparison of silvopasture practices in grassland and crop-oriented areas.
  • Silvopasture practices vary significantly by region, with grasslands and broadleaved forests being prevalent in most areas.
  • Eastern regions tend to prioritize crop-oriented land use over traditional grazing methods.
  • The diversity in regional contexts highlights the need for tailored approaches to silvopasture implementation.

Abstract

Silvopasture combines trees or shrubs with grazing livestock and takes different forms across the Continental region depending on land cover, forest type and ownership patterns. While grasslands and broadleaved forests dominate most areas, eastern regions are often more crop-oriented, showing that the regional context for silvopasture is highly diverse.
