In Brief This article discusses how US medical schools are responding to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) recommendation for a 30% increase in medical school enrollment and key factors leading AAMC to conclude a shortage is likely, including recent data on retirement patterns of older physicians and career expectations of younger physicians. Implications for the surgical workforce are also reviewed.
