Key Points

  • The study aims to simulate the fragmentation of tempered glass using a new fracture model, focusing on key fracture features.
  • Developed a computational model to simulate three-dimensional fragmentation of tempered glass.
  • Considered glass specimens with varying dimensions, pre-stress levels, and fracture initiation conditions.
  • Compared numerical results for fragment number and mean perimeter with experimental data.
  • The fracture model accurately captures branching and merging of cracks.
  • Numerical findings align well with experimental observations for fragment number and mean perimeter.
  • Model effectively represents delayed crack formation and crack arrest phenomena.

Abstract

• A newly developed fracture model is employed to simulate three-diamensional fragmentation of tempered glass. • The model captures key fracture features, including branching and merging cracks, crack arrest, and secondary delayed crack formation. • Glass specimens with varying diamensions, pre-stress levels (including relatively high stresses) and diffrent fracture initiation conditions are considered. • Numerical results for fragment number and mean perimeter are compared with experiments on specimens of varying thicknesses and pre-stress levels. • The present fracture model captures the main physics of tempered glass fragmentation.
