Brain-computer interfaces (BCI) in LATAM are not a futuristic topic: there is serious research in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, and Colombia, several advanced clinical cases, and a regulatory debate just beginning. The region combines an advantage (solid academic centers in neuroscience) with a disadvantage (less developed business ecosystem to bring research to product). In this article I cover which BCIs are operating today in LATAM hospitals and laboratories, which types of interfaces exist and which is realistic for clinical vs mass use, which regional research centers are leading, and which regulatory decisions are coming so the region is not only a technology importer but also a producer.
