Key Points

  • To design a simple device that effectively collects atmospheric particulates through stratification.
  • Developed a layered collection device featuring an insulating tube at an incline with a metal sheet electrode powered by negative high voltage.
  • Implemented a single-side-confined asymmetric electrostatic field combined with gravity for size-graded collection of particulates.
  • Provided the device as open science hardware for replication and improvement by researchers.
  • Successfully demonstrated the collection of lighter particles near the top electrode and heavier particles at the bottom of the tube.
  • Achieved efficient particulate matter collection without moving parts or a filter mesh, enhancing accessibility for air filtration solutions.

Abstract

This paper proposes a layered collection device for atmospheric particulates with an extremely simple structure. The core component is an insulating tube placed at an incline. A metal sheet electrode is affixed along the full length of its top inner wall and powered by a direct-current negative high voltage. Dust particles entering the tube undergo automatic stratification and size-graded collection under the synergistic action of a single-side-confined asymmetric electrostatic field and an inclined gravitational field: lighter particles are captured near the top electrode, while heavier particles settle at the bottom of the tube. This device serves the dual functions of air filtration and the resource collection of multi-size-range particulate matter. It has no moving parts, no filter mesh, and requires no counter electrode. It is provided as open science hardware for researchers to freely replicate and improve.
