DURING the past two or three years, article after article has appeared in the popular press advocating a return to the basics in the teaching of English composition. For example, Newsweek's December, 1975, issue decorated its cover with Why Johnny Can't Write and then proceeded to explain why, in terms which were, for those of us who try to keep abreast of work in composition theory and practice, simplistic and outdated.
