Abstract

Abstract Investigation of 108 small trees ranging in dbh from 0.5 to 19.3 cm for seven western conifer species in western Montana and northern Idaho revealed that for some species sapwood cross-sectional area can estimate crown biomass more precisely than external measurements, such as dbh.For three species, sapwood area was a significantly better estimator than dbh for both foliage and branchwood biomass. For four species, precision of sapwood area and dbh was not significantly different. Forest Sci. 24: 455-457.
