Asthmatic Bronchitis in Children Prognosis for 162 cases, observed 6–11 years

Summary One hundred and eighty five children with asthmatic bronchitis admitted to hospital during 1940–1945, were reviewed with an extensive questionaire in 1951, to see if asthma bronchiale had subsequently developed. One hundred and sixty six replies were received. The prognosis for asthmatic bronchitis as a result of an infection of the respiratory organs (e.g. pneumonia with prolonged expiration), is better than the prognosis for “pure” asthmatic bronchitis, and the prognosis is the same for both sexes. The older the child the more serious is the prognosis, especially among the allergically disposed; it is also worse among the nonallergically disposed than among children who have never had asthmatic bronchitis. It is not of any prognostic importance if the asthmatic bronchitis is associated with a temperature = 38°C on admission or not.
