UPF‐isolated zeta converter‐based battery charger for electric vehicle

Abstract

Conventional electric vehicle (EV) battery chargers suffer from severe power quality (PQ) issues at AC mains, due to non‐linear nature of a diode‐bridge rectifier, used for AC–DC conversion. Here, a power factor correction (PFC) circuit based on an isolated discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) zeta converter topology is designed and implemented for charging a 100 Ah, 48 V lead–acid EV battery. Test results, for charging an EV battery with constant current‐constant voltage mode (CC‐CV) control, are shown with a 1 kW zeta converter prototype. Test results show that the proposed zeta converter conforms to the improved PQ standard such as the IEC 61000–3–2, as well as, a unity power factor (UPF) input current with low harmonic distortion factor is achieved. Moreover, a smooth battery current is obtained during charging, even when there are fluctuations in the supply voltage hence enhanced lifetime of the battery is achieved.
