Abstract

Abstract Over four decades after the concept of the electronic nose was introduced, odor sensing systems have emerged as promising technologies for safety, security, and well‐being. Despite significant research progress, their commercial adoption remains limited. This review provides a systematic overview of odor sensing principles, sensor architectures, and electronic nose systems, and highlights recent advances in data‐driven approaches for sensor information processing. Furthermore, it provides insights into future developments for integrating odor sensing with advanced information processing and AI technologies to enable practical applications that contribute to safety, security, and well‐being. © 2026 Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan and Wiley Periodicals LLC.
