Key Points

  • The aim is to quantify treatment metrics and expected outcomes for hamstring strain injuries in athletes.
  • Part of the 'Perspective for Payers' series to justify physical therapy treatment
  • Discussion of anticipated duration of care and expected visit numbers
  • Support for Clinical Practice Guidelines specific to hamstring strain injuries
  • Provides episode-based metrics relevant for third party payers
  • Aims to establish expected outcomes for orthopedic disorders treated by physical therapists

Abstract

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) has sought to quantify the value of physical therapy and justify a course of treatment to third party payers. However, there has been little information regarding the anticipated duration of care, visit number and expected outcomes for orthpaedic disorders commonly seen by physical therapists. This article is part of the ongoing “Perspective for Payers” series. The goal of this Perspective is to provide episode-based metrics supporting the Clinical Practice Guideline: Hamstring Strain Injury in Athletes.
