Abstract

The research paper explores the idea of capacity building and approaches to the application of AI-based library services in Nigeria. The study is based on an empirical systematic review of literature, published in 2020-25, regarding viable AI uses, capabilities deficit of librarians, obstacles to adopting aimed at the model of sustainable implementation. The paper highlights such applications of AI in libraries at Nigeria, such as AI-assisted metadata creation, virtual reference chatbots, AI-enhanced digitization and optical character recognition, and recommender systems. It concludes that the wide gaps in capacities among Nigerian librarians are restricted AI literacy, low technical and data-handling competence, low ethical and policy consciousness, and little support of curriculum and professional growth. The research further mentions the barriers, which were persistent like poor digital infrastructure, erratic supply of electricity, insufficient funding, institutional support and technological resistance to change. It makes the conclusion that implementing AI successfully in libraries in Nigeria requires the coordinated investments in infrastructure, professional development, curriculum, ethical governance, and mutually beneficial partnerships in ensuring sustainable and responsible innovation.
