Key Points

  • The goal is to create a common European standard for evaluating reusable plastic packaging for sensitive applications.
  • Develop performance criteria for reusable plastic packaging lifecycle management.
  • Ensure compliance with EU regulations such as EC 178/2002 and EU 10/2011.
  • Identify and promote harmonised testing methods among Member States.
  • Proposed standards enhance safety and integrity of reusable packaging for consumers.
  • Increased compliance with EU regulations, leading to improved public health outcomes.
  • Standard testing methods will facilitate consistency across Member States.

Abstract

The challenge: Establish a common European framework for the performance and verification of reusable plastic packagingintended for contact-sensitive applications by ensuring that such packaging:• Maintains functional integrity and health safety throughout its lifecycle.• Complies with existing EU regulatory requirements (Regulations EC 178/2002, EC 852/2004,EC 1935/2004 and EU 10/2011).• Meets consumer expectations, including aesthetics and organoleptic properties.• Relies on harmonised and reproducible testing methods across Member States.
