Comparison of the antimicrobial effects of probiotics on bacteria associated with peri-implantitis

Abstract

Purpose: Peri-implantitis is associated with an increased abundance of Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria around dental implants.This study aimed to investigate the effects of probiotics on bacteria associated with peri-implantitis through in vitro experiments and to propose probiotics suitable for the control of peri-implantitis-associated bacteria.Materials and Methods: The spent culture medium (SCM) was collected from 18 species of probiotics.The antimicrobial activity of SCM collected from probiotic bacteria was evaluated using susceptibility assay.Results: The genus Lacticaseibacillus exhibited the strongest antimicrobial activity against periimplantitis-associated bacteria.In Limosilactobacillus genus.Limosilactobacillus reuteri showed strong antimicrobial activity, and in Bifidobacterium genus, Bifidobacterium longum showed strong antimicrobial activity against peri-implantitis related bacteria.The genus Lactobacillus and Ligilactobacillus exhibited weak antimicrobial activity compared to other probiotics.Streptococcus thermophilus showed weaker antimicrobial activity against peri-implantitis-associated bacteria.Conclusion: Lacticaseibacillus casei, Lacticaseibacillus paracasei, and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus were found to exhibit the strongest antimicrobial activity against peri-implantitis-associated bacteria, and these probiotics may be effective in inhibiting the growth of bacteria associated with periimplantitis.(
