Abstract

Zidovudine, a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, belongs to the class of nucleoside analogs. In this study, the solubility of zidovudine was determined by the laser dynamic method in 14 pure solvents (methanol, ethanol, 1-propanol, isopropyl alcohol, 1-butanol, isobutanol, acetone, acetonitrile, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, n-propyl acetate, n-butyl acetate, methyl tert-butyl ether, water) and four binary mixed solvents (methanol + n-butyl acetate, methanol + methyl tert-butyl ether, methanol + water, acetone + water) over the temperature range of 278.15 to 323.15 K (with 5 K intervals) under atmospheric pressure. The results indicate that the solubility of zidovudine in all tested solvents is positively correlated with the system temperature. The experimental data were fitted using the modified Apelblat equation, λh model, NRTL model, UNIQUAC model, and Jouyban-Acree model. The modified Apelblat equation significantly outperformed the other models in terms of fitting accuracy, yielding the closest agreement with the experimental measurements.
