Key Points

  • This study aims to characterize the RNA virome of bank voles from distinct ecological sites in Sweden and Italy.
  • Sample selection from lung and colon-faecal materials of bank voles.
  • RNA extraction, sequencing using Illumina NextSeq 2000, and bioinformatic processing.
  • Viral contig annotation with a focus on detecting Puumala orthohantavirus-related sequences.
  • Identification of various viral sequences associated with Puumala orthohantavirus.
  • Generated raw data for further analysis including metadata on sequencing and sample origins.

Abstract

This technical note provides an overview of a proof-of-concept metatranscriptomic study conducted within the EU-funded BEPREP project (EU grant agree-ment no. 101060568) to characterise the RNA virome of bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) from ecologically distinct sites in Sweden and Italy. It describes sample selection, RNA extraction, sequencing, bioinformatic processing, and viral contig annotation from lung and colon-faecal samples, with particular attention to the detection of Puumala orthohantavirus-related sequences. The technical document is named 20260530ₘetatransbvBEPREPR0. pdf. Associated raw data from the Illumina NextSeq 2000 sequencing run are named RNA₂025₀13FLI. tar. Details about the sequence raw data are provided in the technical note.
