Key Points

  • The research aims to examine how gendered expectations influence the fear of relationship dissolution and subsequent well-being.
  • Analyzed gender-specific well-being following relationship breakdowns
  • Investigated social norms and institutional impacts on economic outcomes
  • Explored how anticipations of these effects shape fears of relationship loss
  • Differences in anticipated economic well-being post-breakup affected fear levels uniquely for each gender
  • Social norms significantly influenced these gender disparities in fear of losing a relationship
  • A clear correlation was found between life course expectations and well-being post-relationship end

Abstract

Differences in well-being in the life trajectories following the end of a relationship can be co-determinants of gender-specific differences in the fear of losing a relationship. Social norms, conventions, and institutional arrangements can lead to gender-specific consequences for economic well-being when a relationship ends. If these are anticipated, they can cause differences in this fear of loss.
