Does beta blocker use provide benefit in patients with normal cardiac function after a myocardial infarction?
Routine beta blocker use may be unnecessary and potentially harmful in post-myocardial infarction patients with normal cardiac function.
A recent large trial found no benefit from using a beta blocker after a myocardial infarction in the subgroup of patients with a normal cardiac function. Its results may represent a major contribution to reducing unnecessary beta blocker use and the associated serious adverse effects in the growing population of elderly patients who have sustained a myocardial infarction.
