In order to determine the influence of sex, age, and race on judgment of emotions portrayed in facial expression, a set of 40 photographs was developed using models of different ages, races and sexes. College students and second grade children of different races and sexes attempted to identify the emotion portrayed in each photograph. Two major conclusions were drawn: 1. Neither the race, sex nor age of the subjects (judges) influences their ability to identify photographs portraying different emotions. 2. The race, sex and possibly age of the faces portrayed in the photographs does influence the ability of people to identify photographs portraying different emotions.
