Abstract

Progress in regression and feedback from readers motivated us to work on the second edition of our book.We have added several new sections, and integrated various changes and updates.• The overview on regression models in Chap. 2 has been extended through new sections:-Section 2.9 (Regression Models with Functional Covariates) addresses regression situations where covariates come in the form of functions, such as signals, spectra, curves, and histograms.-Section 2.10 (Distributional Regression) comprises subsections on Regression Models for Location, Scale and Shape, Quantile Regression, and Hazard Regression.-Section 2.11 reflects increasing progress in combining Regression Models and Machine Learning. We focus on Trees and Random Forests in Sect.2.11.1, and on Neural Networks and Deep Learning in Sect.2.11.2.We omit algorithmic details, but we describe some recent approaches combining regression models and machine learning.
