Event Management: An International Journal? A Critical Review of Academic Contributions From the Global South

This study reviews Event Management publications from a region that has traditionally received limited academic focus: the Global South. To date, 83 articles with a Global South focus—or 10% of total publications—have been published in Event Management and we can witness a slow but steady upward trend over time. The BRICS countries have received by far the most research attention while voices from the most marginalized regions remain underrepresented. In over 70% of articles, local contributors feature as part of the research team but methodological diversity and innovation are lacking. We argue that more can and should be done to address structural imbalances in knowledge production as well as issues related to “internal colonialism,” and to develop event management into a genuinely global and equitable field that speaks to the realities of diverse societies, cultures, economies, and communities.
