Abstract

Chloroplasts were once free-living cyanobacteria, mitochondria were once free-living proteobacteria, and both have preserved remnants of eubacterial genomes. But from the functional standpoint, both organelles have retained much more of their eubacterial biochemistry than is reflected in their DNA.
