Abstract

A field investigation of the effects of systematic desensitization (SD) on communication apprehension involving 541 college students is reported. The results indicate that SD administered by male lay trainers in either a laboratory or classroom setting resulted in significant reductions in communication apprehension, as measured by self‐report scales immediately after treatment and nine weeks later, when compared to a control group. Male students improved significantly more than female students. Procedures for implementing a SD program in either an academic or business setting are described and explained.
