Watching Brief at Low Snape Farm, Kirkby Overblow, North Yorkshire

The investigation comprised the archaeological monitoring of a single trench. The trench was approximately 17m long, between 0.30m and 0.50m wide and a maximum of 0.80m deep. It was mechanically excavated by a mini-digger fitted with a 300mm wide toothless bucket. The mechanical excavation was subject to continuous archaeological monitoring. No evidence for medieval occupation was disturbed or recorded during the watching brief. The alignment of the trench was approximately along the same line as a portion of the northern arm of the sub-rectangular moat, but there was no evidence for specific moat deposits, differentiated from the overall topsoil. The thickness of deposit (100) may suggest partial infilling of the depression indicating the line of the moat, which is still visible in a reduced form as an earthwork.
