The history of communication/hearing handicap assessment is summarized. Also, the need for a screening tool to measure communication ability of hard-of-hearing adults is emphasized. Guidelines for the development of such a protocol are suggested and a preliminary screening test battery, the Communication Assessment Profile, is described. Profiles on several elderly clients are presented to illustrate the use of the Communication Assessment Profile.
