Key Points

  • To document and assess the historical significance of outbuildings prior to renovation and demolition.
  • Conducted a survey of two outbuildings at 21 Damhead before construction changes.
  • Analyzed building materials and architectural features for historical context.
  • Reviewed historical mapping for site significance.
  • Identified two surviving outbuildings from a mid to late 20th-century smallholding.
  • Determined the stable and piggery were of single-phase construction with minimal modifications.
  • Noted the site’s limited scale in historical farming context, indicating small-scale livestock rearing.

Abstract

An Historic Building Survey was undertaken ahead of the conversion and extension of one outbuilding to form a dwelling and the demolition of another outbuilding at 21 Damhead, Lothianburn, Midlothian. Both outbuildings formed part of a small holding built in the middle to second half of the 20th century. By the 1970s they were part of a larger complex of small outbuildings, however these are the only two to survive. The earlier of the two buildings was a small stable, store and wash house. The other was a purpose-built piggery constructed using material likely from a repurposed military surplus Nissan hut. Both buildings appear to have been single phase constructions with only cosmetic additions to suit usage. The building's size suggests there was a focus on small scale livestock rearing as part of smallholdings. Even considering the numerous buildings represented on the 1972 mapping, the site was not of any great size and does not represent farming on any great scale.
