States sue over Medicaid rule narrowing protections for medically frail

A multistate lawsuit filed June 29 alleges that a Trump administration rule implementing new Medicaid work requirements could jeopardize health care coverage for some individuals with serious mental illnesses, substance use disorders and other complex health conditions. The challenge targets an interim final rule issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) that outlines how states must determine whether beneficiaries qualify for exemptions from the work requirements.
