Abstract

AbstractThe article critically examines the rise, organisation, and legacy of the Mexica (Aztec) and Inca civilisations, two imperial powers of the Americas that developed independently yet reveal striking parallels. Both empires constructed legitimising myths, advanced agricultural systems, and complex socio-political structures that reinforced religious and political authority. Their confrontations with Spain exposed the vulnerabilities of centralised rule, while colonial rule reconfigured but did not erase indigenous traditions. By comparing ecological adaptations, statecraft, religion, and cultural memory, the study highlights universal patterns of empire, resilience, and the enduring significance of Mexica and Inca heritage in shaping modern national identities. Keywords: Mexica civilisation, Inca Empire, State formation, Religion and power, Spanish conquest, Indigenous heritage.
