Abstract

While scientific progress is often attributed to theoretical and empirical advances, the underlying methodological innovations that enable these advances are frequently overlooked. We found that the share of methods papers doubled from 20% in 1980 to 40% in 2019 across all natural sciences, indicating a general transition toward method- and technique-driven science.
