Abstract

ABSTRACT The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in robotic surgery has the potential to revolutionize the field. Early in the surgical journey, AI-assisted operative planning can improve the precision and success of interventions. Additionally, AI-supported intraoperative image processing enhances the detection and localization of surgical tools and native tissues. In education, AI-driven simulation teaching provides effective training platforms, enabling surgeons to refine their skills in a controlled and safe environment. AI technologies also have the potential to aid post-operative monitoring and care, offering personalized and timely interventions should complications occur. However, the incorporation of AI into robotic surgery has notable limitations. Technology is still evolving and there remains great uncertainty about how algorithms integrate data and make decisions, as well important ethical concerns regarding accountability. This review discusses the potential transformative impact of AI in surgery, focusing on the opportunities and challenges afforded by autonomous surgical robots.
