Abstract

This case study applies Coupling Geometry to the Late Bronze Age Collapse (c. 1200–1150 BCE), testing five predictions frozen from the coupling architecture against the archaeological and palaeoclimate record; all five are confirmed. The case is distinctive on two counts. First, it is the one case in the portfolio where the central puzzle defeats every comparator framework: within roughly fifty years, every major civilisation of the Eastern Mediterranean collapsed or was severely damaged — Mycenaean Greece destroyed, the Hittite Empire annihilated, Ugarit burned and never rebuilt, Cyprus devastated, Egypt weakened, Assyria contracted, Kassite Babylon fallen — and diminishing-returns, secular-cycle, world-systems, class-analytic, realist, and ecological accounts each explain aspects of individual collapses while none explains the synchronisation. The framework explains it through the coupling cascade operating at inter-civilisational scale: the palace economies were bound into the first documented tightly coupled multi-node trade network — bronze itself requiring copper and tin that effectively never co-occur — and the coupling that generated the system’s prosperity transmitted its shocks faster than any node could absorb them. Second, the case tests the cascade between systems rather than within one, and the programme’s v3 scoring gives the test quantitative teeth: the coupling ordering of the scored nodes — Mycenaean Greece C = 7.9, the Hittite Empire C = 7.6, pharaonic Egypt C = 4.7 — matches the collapse-severity ordering exactly, with the most-coupled nodes destroyed and the least-coupled survivor continuing as a civilisation. The Sea Peoples are reinterpreted as endogenous products of the cascade — displaced populations from nodes that failed first, arriving at nodes whose buffers the same stresses had thinned — rather than as exogenous cause; the stresses of c. 1200 BCE were not unprecedented, the coupling was. The analysis is post-hoc, its estimates analyst-dependent, its evidence archaeologically underdetermined in places stated plainly in the limitations, and adversarial examination by sceptical scholars is invited.
