Key Points

  • Investigate the propagation of optical energy and image formation along the surfaces of transparent plates modified with optically dense surface layers.
  • Generated optically dense surface layers on transparent plates via thermal tempering or chemical diffusion.
  • Evaluated direct optical wave transmission along surfaces and endfire coupling across polished plate edges over distances exceeding 0.75 m.
  • Surface-guided waves successfully transmitted optical energy and carried optical images along inhomogeneous plate surfaces.
  • Image propagation exhibited distinctive characteristics, including chromatic variation and the independence of lateral and longitudinal magnifications.
  • Both direct surface wave transmission and inter-plate endfire transfer were achieved across distances greater than 0.75 m.

Abstract

Transparent plates with optically dense surfaces such as can be obtained by thermal tempering or chemical diffusion are shown to transmit significant amounts of optical energy along their surfaces. The surface-guided waves thus obtained will carry images; some special properties of these images are described, including the chromatic variation and independence of lateral and longitudinal magnifications. The energy can be endfired from the polished end of one plate and received by another. Both direct transmission along the surface and endfire have been accomplished over distances in excess of 0.75 m.
