Abstract

Summary. In contrast to the upland field, the paddy field is usually left under water from late spring to the autumn harvest. Under water, the arable soil changes from an oxidizing to a reducing condition because of microbiological activity. A basic knowledge of the reduction process taking place in the waterlogged paddy soils has become especially important in the study of microbiological metabolism in soils or sediments.
