Abstract

The present physical definition of nearby giant extragalactic and Galactic H II regions on the basis of Balmer emission line and radio continuum maps exhibits luminosities, masses, and densities which range over several orders of magnitude, despite the relatively narrow range of galaxies studied. By combining maps of the extragalactic H II regions with radio continuum maps of the largest Galactic objects, comparisons at similar spatial resolutions have become possible. It is noted that despite the large variation in structure and integrated properties of the largest H II regions in different galaxies, the properties of objects in any individual galaxy are relatively homogeneous. This suggests that the galactic environment is an important parameter, influencing the structure and evolution of the H II regions.
