Abstract

This paper identifies four points of historical reference in the development of local government administration in Nigeria. Also, the paper looks at the reasons for the establishment of local government, functions and characteristics of good governance and accountability. Factors militating against performance of local government administration in Nigeria were articulated, areas of contribution to development were also identified and concludes that the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria should be amended to enable State Governments and the various State Houses of Assembly loosen their firm grip on the local governments in order to allow the local government authorities to provide the much needed goods and services for the people.
