Abstract

The effect of uniaxial tension in changing the cross-sectional areas of the Fermi surfaces of copper, silver and gold normal to ⟨100⟩ and ⟨111⟩ has been measured by observing the change of phase of de Haas-van Alphen oscillations in the persistent mode of a superconducting solenoid. Using the earlier results of the effect of hydrostatic pressure (Templeton 1966) it is possible to separate the effects of the change of volume and the change of shape of the unit cell associated with a uniaxial tension.
