Abstract

The control of typhoid fever depends ultimately on the control of the chronic carrier. The detection of a chronic carrier who is responsible for the infection of sporadic cases or of small groups of cases is usually a very difficult task. The introduction of refined culture media, particularly the bismuth sulphite medium of The new typing method devised by Craigie and Yen (1938a) has provided another weapon of great efficacy. It now seems possible to organize the fight against the chronic typhoid carrier in a manner that promises to lead far towards the ultimate goal, the eradication of the disease.
