Abstract

The kinetics of the formation of the iron‐tin alloy have been studied at temperatures below and above the melting point of tin (232°C). At all temperatures studied, the growth obeyed the parabolic‐rate law. This is indicative of a diffusion mechanism. An Arrhenius plot of the data gives a straight line below the melting point of tin and a straight line above the melting point of tin, with a sharp break at the melting point. The activation energy is the same below and above the melting point of tin and is . The kinetics of the growth were also studied as a function of various properties associated with the tin plate: tin‐coating weight, steel base, and the type of pickle to which the steel base was subjected prior to electroplating of the tin. No effect due to any of these variables was found.
