The complete utilization history of a “synthetic” cohort of nursing home admissions in 1976 is projected by normalizing length of stay (LOS) specific discharge rates derived from life tables to an estimated 1.1 million persons comprising the 1976 admission cohort. The admission cohort and the life tables were derived from the 1977 National Nursing Home Survey. Results focus on the LOS distribution of the admission cohort, the discharge status of members of the cohort by LOS, and the total days of nursing home care used by subgroups of the cohort.
