Abstract

The separation of cloud and aerosol extinction in satellite solar occultation data is discussed in the context of a simple model for the wavelength dependence of extinction. The model is shown graphically in terms of a scatter plot of 0.525‐/μm extinction versus 1.02‐/μm extinction. This plot contains two regions: one arising from aerosol and the other from an aerosol/cloud mixture. Examples of two‐wavelength data obtained by the SAGE II instrument are presented and found to agree well with the model. The single wavelength criteria used previously to separate cloud and aerosol are examined in the context of the two‐wavelength model.
